Van hits girl, 16, in Brooklyn, leaving her in critical condition

A 16-year-old girl was clinging to life after she was struck by a vehicle while crossing a Brooklyn street just before 9 a.m. Tuesday, cops said.
Yasmelin Iglesias was in the crosswalk at 48th St. and 6th Ave. in Sunset Park when she was hit, cops said. She was taken to Lutheran Medical Center with severe head trauma.

Her family said she was undergoing surgery.

The victim was taken to Lutheran Medical Center with severe head trauma. Police investigate at the scene.

"I hope she has the strength to survive these surgeries. She's young but doesn't eat too much. She's very skinny," said her grandmother, Altagracia Cordero, 64. "She's very lovable. She's always here checking on us."

Police investigate but no immediate charges were filed against the driver.

Cops said she was crossing the corner with her mother when a white van traveling south on 6th Ave. ran her over. The 29-year-old man who was driving the van stayed on the scene and their were no immediate charges, cops said.
Maria, a 79-year-old crossing guard who would only identify herself by her first name, heard the crash and ran over to see the teen's mom trying to keep her conscious.

The driver, a 29-year-old man, remained at the scene while police investigated.

“She was trying to open her eyes when her mom was talking to her. Her mom was hysterical,” Maria said.
“The mother was telling her, ‘Don't go! Stay with me! You can't die,’” Maria said. “‘You have a purpose in life, in this world! You can't die!’
